You must have heard of the famous saying, “God helps those who help themselves”. It conveys that only if one helps himself, will he be favored by God. Similarly, in order to be there for our loved ones, we need to keep ourselves fit. If we don’t pay attention to our own health needs, it is certain that we won’t be able to help others. Only when we are physically fit, will we be in a position to make our strong presence in other’s lives.

We are aware of the importance of healthy living; we know that ‘Health is Wealth’. Yet, we tend to ignore our own health needs. It is important to understand that there’s nothing wrong in addressing your health needs first. It’s not a selfish act; in fact, it’s absolutely okay. 

Read through the words of Parker Palmer and you will realize the importance of self-care – “Self-care is never a selfish act—it is simply good stewardship of the only gift I have, the gift I was put on earth to offer to others.”

So true! We spend all our lives prioritizing family, children, and work, and in the  bargain, ignore our own self, our health, our physical fitness. But it is not a fair thing to do. This way we will not be of any help to ourselves and to others. We are not doing justice on either side. We must realize the significance of self-care and put our health first.

The best example is when we go on flights. Remember how they tell us to put on our oxygen mask first on an airplane before we help others...! It’s so obvious that only when we nurture ourselves, will we be able to support others.

Self-care is not selfish - you cannot serve from an empty vessel

So, commit yourself to self-care and putting your health first. Wondering how you can do that? Take a look at the following essential tips:

• Make it a point to eat three healthy meals a day. Never skip ‘Breakfast.’

• Exercise every day. Choose any form of Physical fitness – Gym, Walk, Aerobics, Zumba, Dance etc.

• Regular Yoga and Meditation, breathing exercises are key to staying fit; treat them as essential parts of your exercise regime.

• Mindful Eating – Prefer eating healthy food (green vegetables, fruits and juices) and be aware of what and why you are eating.

• Find ways to relax – take time out to go to your favorite salon for a massage etc.; it rejuvenates you from within.

• Rest intervals during the day are equally important. Don’t exert yourself. Say No to ‘overworking’.

• Enough sleep is necessary. Always get a good night's sleep.

• Limit screen time and social media engagement.

• Make a list of things that you crave to do; set them in order of priority.

• And above all - Laugh and smile more. Stay Positive.

As you work through the process of self-care and put your health requirements first, you will gradually see how your habits and daily life routine starts benefitting your family and people around you.
