Every sector, every industry demands knowledgeable professionals. And when it comes to knowledge, marks are just numbers. They are not a measure of one’s skills and knowledge. Therefore, it is important to focus on knowledge and marks will follow.

But how do learners undermine the importance of marks, when ‘grades’ and ‘scores’ are the defining criteria of good and bad, pass and fail in today’s education system?

Well, the best way is to help and encourage learners to explore the knowledge gained from textbooks through practical exposure. Learners should not be restricted to textbooks alone. Which is why, schools integrate an academic curriculum that strikes a balance between classroom study and extracurricular activities. Extra-curricular activities give learners a chance to apply conceptual knowledge in various activities.

It is equally important for learners to enjoy the process of learning and not focus on the end result. Involving oneself in the learning process engages the brain in imbibing ideas and knowledge more strongly rather than worrying about the anxieties of end result. Also, in order to overcome the anxieties and stress of marks, learners should learn to always see the ‘big picture’, the long run benefits of the knowledge they are gaining today.

Remember, grading or marking is just a standardized measurement criterion of various levels of achievement in a course or subject. The focus should not be on how much one scored, but what was learnt out of it. 

Grades and marks don’t measure your knowledge, skills, aptitude and abilities. It doesn’t define you as a person. Knowledge does.

The current best example is our Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, an exemplary leader. His ordinary journey behind the extraordinary success is noteworthy. What did he do differently? He never let himself be defined by the end result; he kept on learning through the journey. 

So study because knowledge is power. Study because what you learn can never be taken away from you. Study because you want to know more and are naturally curious. Never aim for grades, aim for knowledge because it enhances you and helps you grow.
